New featurette explores Sonic's roots

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Sega’s iconic mascot Sonic the Hedgehog. To commemorate this special occasion and raise awareness for the recently released Sonic Generations, Sega has posted a fascinating featurette which explores the creation of the spiky speedster.

Sega Sonic

In the early nineties Sega was in desperate need of a popular mascot to boost sales of the Mega Drive and be the face of a new video game franchise. Alex Kidd had been the company’s mascot since 1986 but Sega executives felt he just wasn’t in the same league as Nintendo’s Mario. Sega employees were asked to submit suggestions and two men - Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima - teamed up to produce the original concept for Sonic.

Sonic’s appearance was then tweaked by Sega of America to make him more marketable, and in 1991 the first Sonic the Hedgehog game was released.

You can catch the more detailed version of Sonic’s inception in the featurette below, and be sure to check out Sonic Generations on Xbox 360, PS3, 3DS or PC for a new take on some of the most iconic stages, bosses and characters from the series’ 20-year history.

I agree, Sonic Generations is a must get. The same with Rayman Origins. It will be a good time for some platforming. I like the fact that you going to play in 2D and 3D. Its going to be super fun.
