We all have them. There’s always something that gets under our skin and irritates us. Something that sidetracks us for long enough to ask ‘Why?’
We of course talking about pet peeves in gaming - those little (and sometimes not so inconsequential) things that game developers do (or don’t do) that frustrate us to the point of distraction.
This Question of the Day asks:
What are your top gaming pet peeves?
Maybe you get frustrated when you can’t skip a cut-scene (even though you’ve watched it before)? Perhaps you get irritated by the lack of interaction (and destructible objects) in a game world? Bad voice acting, glitchy behaviour, irregular check-points, inexplicable slow down… all valid irritations in gaming.

Comments:
Unskippable cutscenes just after checkpoints and just before a very challenging section. Having to hear the same scene over and over just to have another chance at beating a difficult section really grates me.
I have to say sometimes stupid AI bugs me. When you busy shooting enemies from behind cover and the AI is programmed to come stand at the spot where you are and the push you out of cover. and another thing is Unbalanced Difficulty. Take Modern Warfare 1 on Veteran. They can bend Bullets around corners and are really grenade happy etc.
Enemies that constantly respawn until you reach a certain place.
The classic "defend this position until backup arrives" in campaigns. Not my strong point...
People in Battlefield 3 MP who don't play the game like it's meant to be played: TEAM based. The attacking team doesn't need 15 snipers sitting on a hill. Bombs don't plant themselves!
LAG!
Granted points 3 and 4 aren't really developers' faults, but they have caused me to inflict serious hurt on my poor keyboard :(
I dont have pet peeves from the games itself because look face it a game is always going to have a glitch or some small issue and then thier is always an update to fix it, what irritates me is players with in MP that will sit in your spawn spot and ruin the whole experience of the game just so they can get that kill streak or you get those panzies that cant stand losing and will jump out just so they dont lose points, that is my pet peeve, i have no issue with bad acting or glitchy behaviour even if i get lag in a game it dsnt bother me, its those other players that cant play properly
Unskippable cut-scenes is my number one pet peeve - Graeme described what annoys me perfectly! I also get annoyed when checkpoint systems are not done properly, and AI that just stands around while I have to take on an entire army by myself. And last but not least, let's not forget those pesky Quick Time Events which are likely to cause me to throw my controller through the TV! Anyone played Prince of Persia and died a couple of hundred times in a row while trying to defeat the final boss? QTE, annoying gamers around the world, and yet developers still include them!
in BF3 the AI is really stupid, example: theres 10 enemies, my guys only shoot 3 enemies, then my guys wait at the door, waiting for me to kill the other 7: lol i was like shouting "shoot the stupid enemies!!!"
Theres so many but LAg has to be the biggest
Game over / you have died screens followed by a loading screen, followed by a list of options, followed by a loading screen, back in the game (Prince of Persia Warrior Within and Sands of Time I remember the best).
Unresponsive controls. Character randomly picking a cover location when you hit the button. The list really does go on and on and on.
LAG for me number one, i hate taking cover for only to die from bullets somehow bending around corners. Texture pop-ups really p@#$s me off like in Rage. Stupid AI you are busy in fight and the AI character continues moving forward and dies only for you to do the whole checkpoint again. To much snipers in multiplayer games. If you really want to get on my nerves kill me more then 2 times in one match. They must limit the amount of classes players per match. Like the others said unable to skip cutscenes you already saw. Unable to chance controller configuration in some games. Spawn killers in multiplayer games are not cool, you spawn only to die 2seconds later. Lonewolf players in team based games, they only thing they care about are there kill counts and ranks.
Wow, this seems to have struck a nerve - keep 'em coming, let the healing begin! ;)
Why is the sniper/ recon class so hated, without snipers you would make it throught the battle field without that cover fire, and not all of us sit and camp in one spot (i tend to hunt down campers and single them out), ive saved many a players hide being the sniper class just ask POItjie, and if ppl tend to run inot my sights more than once i cant help but shoot at them lol
I also play the assault class and with Smuroh being my sniper backup makes my job easier. you can ask him, sometimes i sit next to him and snipe with a AK47 not very accurate but it works (sometimes). Some guys give snipers a bad name. So i only agree with 50-50 of the sniper camping issue.
two words - CRATES!
i understand where the need fro crates came from in the old days of very boxy levels, but now there is simply no need!
Crates is two words? Good old crates, and their comrade in arms, the obligatory warehouse level.
Surely hating crates is like hating exploding barrels?
Don't get me wrong, I like snipers and I myself enjoy sniping. A lot. What irritates the **** out of me is when EVERYONE thinks they're snipers and we need to attack. It's ridiculous. And the n00bs also don't realise it's called recon for a reason. They don't even have the courtesy to spot tanks and jets for anti-vehicle measures to be taken. sigh... /rant
A short campaign when I buy a game I don't want it to be finished in 1 bloody day especially when you just payed R600 for it
I just thought of something I don't like about games.......that's not having the cash to buy them all.
@Grizzly_za you are absolutely right about those idiots that will sit in groups of like 5 like a bunch of birds on a telephone wire sniping together. And recon is ment to be played properly u not a lone wolf you are thier to provide support and spot enemies, BF3 is not about your K/D ration or how many ribbons you get, its awesome when u get them but i get more enjoyment out of it when i know ive just saved my teammate from being knifed in the back, so i agree with you 100%
@POItjie your correct i think thats my top pet peeve about games not having the money to buy them all "a tear rolls dowm my cheek"
@Smuroh and Poltjie What platform do you guys play BF3 on? Could do with more like minded team mates...
@Grizzly_za we game on the Xbox 360. Our gamertags are the same as our nicks
lol. I don't play online nearly enough to have any pet peeves regarding MP experience. I mainly play SP games.
One thing that also annoys the crap out of me is when you went from one place to another (traveled a LONG way) and when you get their was told do go do something at the place you just traveled from. Usually an open world issue. If travel is quick and painless (e.g. GTA IV taxi) then no worries. But if it involves me having to spend another 20 minutes just getting their ... wasting my gaming time!
When people talk trash on games like Street Fighter and then refuse to fight me. Some guy beat me one time when I was trying to learn a new character and then sent me a message calling me a f-ing loser. Then he wouldn't respond to any of my fight requests or other messages.
But justice would be served. I randomly encountered him online a few days later and proceed to beat then crap out him with my main character. I can't stand people that run away from a challenge. I'm not afraid to lose or admit that someone is better than me.
Hah, awesome - he got it in the end! ;)
I think developers should have a look at this list of peeves and try to do something about them in their future games, lots of great ones here!
@John i know what you mean, those panzies are really annoying all the trash talking and then when they know they are going to lose they cry about it a nd jump out of the game.......losing is all part of the fun its how you learn to get better
@POltjie Aaw... I'm on PC and PS3...
My top gaming peeve are pirates...
