In honour of the release of Battlefield 3 today, this edition of the Question of the Day asks:
“How do you approach shooters: As a run-and-gun or sniping player?”
Late last year, Lisa wrote about her opinions on the differences between run-and-gun players and those of us who prefer to hang back and take pot-shots at enemies in shooters ranging from all-out action games like Gears of War, and more precise experiences like Medal of Honor, while drawing on her background as a shooter player ‘back in the day’ and her experiences today.
Be sure to read that excellent editorial over here, and while you do, have a little think about your own habits as a shooter player.
Do you prefer to run ahead and get the bad guys before everybody else, or have you got a little more patience and are willing to find a piece of cover and carve through your foes more slowly?
As you can see in El33tonline’s review of Battlefield 3, the run-and-gun approach will get you cut down to size, so the more deliberate method is necessary.

I'd like to think of myself as a tactical player. Whether it's FPS's or any other game. I'd want to take as little hits as possible no matter how long it takes to finish the game. I've seen some idiots shooting, slashing & button- bashing just to get through a game.
I'm always upfront in the battle, but I don't do it lone wolf.....I like team play when it comes to multiplayer. I always take a tactical approach to my shooter......I can overthink a situation within seconds.....if you don't you die. I'm not that big of a Sniper....when I'm the sniper class i always tend to be running around.....I can't sit on one spot for too long as i get bored.....
Then you get games were Run n Gun is the only way to play.....
It depends i usually like to take my time and save as much ammo as i can but when there are alot then i shoot wild :D
I'm actually pretty rubbish at shooters, so in a run and gun encounter I'll usually lose to better players. Consequently, I like to try and stay out of the line of fire while I line up shots. So yes, I'm one of THOSE people.

I think for me it depends on the situation. Normally I enjoy going in Guns Blazing, but I do have patience to enable me to be a fairly decent sniper...
Run, duck, roll, move from cover to cover - schnell!! It is certainly run and gun for me and thanks to those diligent peeps who provide suppressing fire and sniper cover ;-)
I am also a run and gunner but with a little bit of patience i look for the guy you shot my comrade in front and take revenge in his honor but this morning in Battlefield3 i was full out Rambo take no prisoners.
if i get an LMG gun......then i unleash the fury! RAMBO style baby! "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!" dadadadadadadadada!
It all depends on the game and situation, sometimes u need to be up close and in the action and other times it pays to sit back and take those head shots
SMORUH!!! I know it's you hiding in the bushes 400 yards away with your trusty sniper counting 1,2,3 little soldiers,4,5,6 little soldiers 7,8,9 little soldiers and POP their's #10.
@optimusaim thats classic i cant stop laughing
optimusaim......cover my flank on the left. I'm almost at the MCOM station.....Taking fire Taking Fire.....where is my backup.......ahhhhh.....got them......need a engineer to repair my buggy, over.....where are they Smuroh, you are our eyes in the sky......
Roger that just flying over head in my helicopter pick off enemies advancing from the north.
I tend to be a bit of both. It really depends on the situation I'm faced with.
FPS is my least favorite genre, but there are few greater joys in gaming than a well aimed shot to the head from hundreds of yards away with a sniper rifle.
Is run-and-gunning with a sniper an option? :P
Is run-and-gunning with a sniper an option? :P
I think that is an option, if you can get the right sniper gun, with a quick fire rate them you can pull it off. or just rip out your handgun like Smuroh...
