Thanks to a bit of enormous news yesterday, we got to thinking about the fun and addictive nature of sandbox and open-world games, which lead us to this Question of the Day:
What about Grand Theft Auto, and open-world games, do you find most appealing?
Rockstar Games went and revealed that the studio will formally announce Grand Theft Auto V next week (with a trailer!), and while the GTA series is definitely the dominant series in the open-world genre of games, other players have appeared to challenge that strangehold.
Games like Assassin’s Creed, inFamous, Red Dead Redemption, Saints Row and even the recently-released Batman: Arkham City.
The question is, what makes these games so fun and addictive? Why are these games able to hold our attention for so long and provide us with awesome, unique stories to tell our friends?
What do you find most appealing about the chance to enter one of these worlds and jump, climb, shoot, glide, destroy and generally cause havoc?

Comments:
i love open-world games coz every time you play it, it always feels diffirent :)
Its always fun to play an open world game, because you can play it the way you want it and you always find new things. i agree with fletbed. My favorite open world is Borderlands, Assassins Creed and saints row.
I like the fact that you're essentially given free reign to explore the environment and aren't entirely constrained by a tight linear story arc. The ability to discover new locations on your own without having to be lured there by a carrot on a stick also appeals. Finally, in more recent(ish) games - like GTA IV - the world is so densely populated with rich, detailed graphics that it's hard to be become bored, as there's always something new to catch your eye.
I love exploring the world that has been created for you...it's so detailed that it almost seems alive. It's also fun to go wherever you choose and not be forced to follow a certain path. My favourite open world games are Borderlands and Batman: Arkham City.
Even though you have a specific story to follow which points you in a certain direction, sandbox allows for you to do it at your own leisure. I will admit i`m not a big fan of GTA but i respect the frontier in gaming that was created by iy. My fav sandbox games are Assassins Creed, Borderlands, Prototype and Batman Arkhum City when i eventually get the GOTY edition. I wont be surprised if GTA5 brings something new to the sandbox medium which will be awesome for gaming in general
Seems like Assassins Creed and Borderlands is a favorite for everyone. I so want to go home now and play some borderlands till the sun goes down....
Sand box games are an awesome concept and i wish more games would use this, it allows for longer gameplay and like with AC can immerse you into a whole world. AC i think is the best concept for sand box it meshes so well into one neat package
Assassins Creed will be everyones fav because it has an amazing story, beautiful ingame design and the fighting is just awesome
Yes, AC is a marvellous mix of great storytelling, beautiful graphics and well thought-out gameplay mechanics. The ability to climb everything so fluidly - parkour style - is a joy when you pull off an uninterrupted run across rooftops.
Wow i wanna play ACB now
i just want to know, if i make a game where you actually play in a sandbox, will it still be considered a Sandbox game???
I guess it would be a sandbox sandbox game.
As long as your power ups involve throwing sand in a guys face takes more hp then it will work. Maybe if there are hidden items in the sandbox to use as projectiles, like dummies or jawbreakers that fell out of kids mouths. The possibilities are endless
do i get an achievement for building a sand castle?
do i get an achievement for smashing your sand castle lol
Mine is Assassin’s Creed, GTA, Oblivion/Skyrim, Just Cause 2, Far Cry 2 and 3, Mafia 2. I just like being free and do what I want to do in a game.
What can I say? I love to explore. Also, going anywhere when I feel like it is great.
