“Surely the new Nintendo machine will leave you all with your mouth open.”

Bold words from legendary Nintendo designer and Metroid co-creator, Yoshio Sakamoto, but he must surely believe those words if he’s willing to spill them on the public stage.

According to Sakamoto, Nintendo’s “obligation” in the world of videogames and entertainment is to “surprise users with a new game console,” rather than follow in the footsteps of innovators – Nintendo always strives to be the innovator and will be aiming to create new experiences and consoles that continue to astonish its audiences.

Speaking to Spanish site 3D Juegos, Sakamoto said of Nintendo’s next console:

“At Nintendo we always have the obligation to surprise users with a new game console. We have never done what others have. We prefer to create something new that catches attention, and I think this will continue this time as well. Surely the new Nintendo machine will leave you all with your mouth open.”

As for when this new Nintendo console will be released (either handheld or home based), Sakamoto was less forthcoming, but according to comments made by both Nintendo president Satoru Iwata and Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, we may still have a couple years to go before we catch our first glimpse of the hardware.

At least we’ve still got the amazing 3DS to look forward to!
