It’s just been announced that the release of LittleBigPlanet 2 has been pushed back into January of 2011, following a previously announced release date of November 16th in the US.
Posting on the official website, developer Media Molecule said that LittleBigPlanet 2 is “a crazy dream” to “allow players to make whatever kind of game they want,” but like most crazy dreams, it can be something of a challenge to turn such vision into reality, and more importantly, “fun games.”
And even though the team has been working like “powered-up space ninjas” to make this crazy dream real and fun, they had to take the hard decision and delay the worldwide release of LittleBigPlanet 2 until January 2011.
Disappointing news indeed, and while one might immediately think that this delay is a result of an increasingly crowded end-of-year release schedule (which must have factored into the decision), you should also take into consideration the fact that the LittleBigPlanet 2 beta is currently on the go, where the development team must be learning all kinds of crazy things about their game that they didn’t even know were possible - things that need to be fixed or even explored further, meaning more development time.
Also, when El33tonline saw LittleBigPlanet 2 at gamescom in August, the game was looking a little… rough. Very fun, but rough.
But fear not! Sony and Media Molecule have released a bounty of videos and information regarding the ’Ultra-Play-Create-Share’ platform game, and you can browse through El33tonline’s previous coverage of LittleBigPlanet 2 to keep yourself entertained… and probably increase your anticipation for the game.
Here’s the announcement post from the LittleBigPlanet site, in full:
“LittleBigPlanet 2 is a crazy dream, a dream to allow players to make whatever kind of game they want, but also to play though a great adventure of drama and excitement, power-ups, and cinematics. But like all of the most ambitious ideas, it can be a considerable challenge to turn these dreams in to fun games.
“We’ve all been working like powered-up space ninjas and we’re almost there, but because we love what we’ve made, and we love our little sack-friends, and most of all we love all our fans out there, we couldn’t let you all get together until we knew we were giving you the best experience imaginable. Which is why we’ve taken the hard decision to delay the worldwide release of LittleBigPlanet 2, originally slated for later this year to January 2011.
“We know this will come as disappointing news for all you LittleBigPlanet fans, and believe us, we are disappointed too. We are a tight-knit team and we take enormous pride in our work, so to raise the bar we’ve set with the original LittleBigPlanet, a game that has been so embraced by all, we’ve agreed to allow ourselves a bit more time to deliver the experience that our great fans and community deserve. We are truly sorry, but hope you understand that we have to build the best possible game, as it is the foundation of our community.
“On the upside, we are going to find a way to give more of you a taste of LBP2 prior to launch, so stay tuned.
“Thanks for your continued love and support, it won’t be long – we promise.”

Boooo! :(
This is a bit sad, but I'm also a little relieved because of the crowded release schdule that was mentioned. I'm much more likely to get GT5 now.
I'm sure a lot of people are in the same mindset: "Less games is more games!" ;)
But still. Unfortunate.
