And wouldn’t you know it, Mafia II is this week’s No. 1 on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing. Mob connections do have their benefits, it seems.
Are the other games ‘on the take’? Were Kane & Lynch 2 and Toy Story 3 threatened and told to ‘take a dive’ this week, or else? How many cement-encrusted game boxes are now lying at the bottom of a river somewhere, just so that Mafia II could parade around at the top of the UK sales listing?
We’ll never know.
But then again, Mafia II is the UK’s biggest game launch this year, since the release of Red Dead Redemption almost 4 months ago. Even mob connections can’t get you that kind of success!
According to Chart Track, the Xbox 360 version of Mafia II took 52% of overall sales, followed by 41% on the PS3 and 7% on the PC. The launch of the original Mafia in 2004, across PC, PS2 and Xbox, can only claim 29% of Mafia II’s first week sales numbers. Now that’s power you can’t buy!
Despite a valiant 33% sales surge for Kane & Lynch 2 this past week, the game is relegated to No. 2 on the chart, while Toy Story 3 (sales down 11%) and Red Dead Redemption (sales flat) have to settle for No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.
Thanks to price promotions on Wii hardware in the UK, sales of Wii Sports Resort is up a whopping 91% this past week, shooting the title from No. 16 to No. 5 on the chart. Chart hero Just Dance (sales up 4%) steps down to No. 6 from No. 5 last week, while Super Mario Galaxy 2 (sales up 8%) is a non-mover at No. 7.
LEGO Harry Potter (sales down 12%) falls to No. 8 from No. 4, Sniper: Ghost Warrior makes a miraculous return to the coveted Top Ten at No. 9, while Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands (sales up 4%) falls to No. 10 from No. 8.
