EA Q1 financial results: Profits posted as net revenue climbs

Electronic Arts LogoEA recently released its first quarter financial results, posting profits of $96 million for the period ending June 30th, up by some margin from a loss of $234 million during the same quarter last year.

Revenue was up to $815 million from $644 million last year, which represents growth of 27 percent. These solid results were due in part to the continued strong performance of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the iPad version of Scrabble, 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa and FIFA 10.

During the last quarter, FIFA World Cup South Africa sold-in (ordered by retailers) 3 million units, while Bad Company 2 sold-in 1 million units.

FIFA Online 2 reached five million registered players this past quarter, and in July the game saw three million unique users and 200 000 concurrent players. The game is currently a top-three online title in Korea.

Once again, EA claims to be the number one publisher on Xbox 360 and PS3 for the calendar year, with a 22 percent publishing share, while the company is also the number one PC publisher, with a 33 percent share of the retail market. The company was also the top publisher across Apple’s mobile devices this past quarter, claiming nine of the top ten games during the launch of the iPhone 4 in June.

EA expects to grow in the digital sector, too, with revenue in this market predicted to expand by 30 percent year-over-year, to $750 million for the fiscal year. Digital revenue during the recent quarter was posted at $188 million, up from $124 million during the same period last year.

EA CEO John Riccitiello said of these solid quarterly results:

“We had a solid first quarter, exceeding expectations both top and bottom line. Top quality titles like 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, innovative digital offerings for titles like Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Scrabble on the Apple iPad are driving the business.”

The release of EA’s quarterly results also revealed that Crysis 2 has been delayed into 2011, while Need For Speed: SHIFT 2 has been confirmed for a 2011 release as well.
