Blizzard has revealed that the studio’s recently released StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty for the PC and Mac managed to sell over 1.5 million copies during the first 48 hours of its availability, easily making it the best-selling PC game of 2010, and the fastest-selling strategy title of all time.
On day one of release, July 27th, StarCraft II sold over 1 million units, and was available at more than 8 000 stores worldwide, in 11 different languages and across five different continents.
CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, Mike Morhaime, said that Blizzard was “pleased that so many people around the world have already picked up a copy of the game,” and that the company looks forward to “welcoming even more players to Battle.net in the weeks and months ahead.”
Senior vice president of merchandising at videogame retail giant GameStop, Bob McKenzie, said that over 3 000 of the company’s stores were open at midnight to sell StarCraft II, while going on to say that “StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is officially GameStop’s fastest-selling PC game since Blizzard launched World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King in 2008.”
If you hadn’t got the picture by now, StarCraft II is big. So big, in fact, that in the UK, the game surpassed the entire lifetime sales of the original StarCraft… in less than a week of market availability.
It’s big.
