Acclaim shuts down (again) following Playdom and Disney acquisitions

Acclaim Games Logo Acclaim Games (not to be confused with Acclaim Entertainment) has been shut down after four years in business bringing online games developed in Asia to Western markets.

Text on the publisher’s official website reads:

“We regret to inform you that all Acclaim games will no longer be in service effective August 26, 2010,” going to on assure players in the possession of any unused Acclaim Coins (the company’s virtual currency across its range of titles) can be reimbursed by emailing a dedicated address (found on the site).

After the shuttering of the original publisher, Acclaim Entertainment, in 2004, a former Activision executive by the name of Howard Marks bought the rights to the Acclaim name for a reported $100 000, and along with industry veteran Dave Perry, Acclaim Games was founded with an online-focussed business strategy, specifically, finding popular games developed in Asia and launching them in the West.

Some of these games include titles such as BOTS!!, 9Dragons, 2Moons, Dance! Online, and The Chronicles of Spellborn.

Following the recent acquisition of Acclaim by social and Facebook game developer, Playdom, and then the subsequent acquisition of Playdom by Disney, it seems as though there’s no room for Acclaim to continue to operate as a brand.

The company’s Flash-based massively multiplayer online game, Kogamu, remains operational on Facebook under Playdom.
