Well, Capcom and Namco have finally gone and done it: The two giants of the fighting game world have come together to create a mash-up title.
Street Fighter X Tekken was officially announced this past weekend during the recent San Diego Comic Con, and will feature characters from the Street Fighter universe and characters from the Tekken universe battling it out for franchise superiority, all set in the style of Street Fighter IV with 3D visuals in a 2D perspective.
But that’s not all. A game called Tekken X Street Fighter was also announced, currently in development at Namco under the watchful eye of Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada.
This game will also feature characters from both fighting franchises, but will be set in the traditional style of a fully 3D Tekken game. While hardly any further information is known about this particular title, a bunch of details were announced regarding Street Fighter X Tekken.
In development at Capcom for Xbox 360 and PS3 under Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono, Street Fighter X Tekken will feature Versus, Training and Tag Team modes that will include “new enhancements to make the fighting experience more in-depth and enjoyable,” while all Tekken characters used in this new title will retain their “unique characteristics and signature moves.”
Commenting on the project, Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono said:
“This is history we’re making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn’t just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I’m going to give it my all.”
As far as a release date is concerned, don’t expect either Street Fighter X Tekken or Tekken X Street Fighter to show up on store shelves any time soon - Ono has stated that the first game will probably only arrive two years from now (development began two months ago), while Tekken X Street Fighter will most likely appear after Street Fighter X Tekken.
