Just Add Water, developer of the 2D retro-inspired shooter Gravity Crash, has officially announced that the studio is currently working on “multiple projects, across multiple platforms” that deal with “all of your favourite Oddworld characters.”
Oddworld is, of course, the universe invented and created by Oddworld Inhabitants and game industry veteran Lorne Lanning - a universe filled with all kinds of delightful characters, the most recognisable of which would be ‘Abe’ from the games Abe’s Odyssey and Abe’s Exodus.
The last game to appear out of the Oddworld universe was the Xbox game ‘Stranger’s Wrath,’ before the principals of Oddworld Inhabitants decided to move into intellectual property development, including movie production with videogame adaptations to support the IP, while trying to investigate the Oddworld universe in various media.
Now with the announcement from Just Add Water, it seems as though Oddworld Inhabitants has found a way to produce new games set in the universe by working with an external development partner.
From Just Add Water’s blog:
“It’s with a huge amount of pride that we can announce that for the past 12 months we have been working extremely closely with the fantastic people at Oddworld Inhabitants, from what started off as brief discussions in June 2009, to now working on multiple projects, across multiple platforms.
“Whilst we cannot go into specifics right now, we can tell you that over the coming weeks and months we will be announcing these exciting projects starring all of your favourite Oddworld characters.”
Just Add Water’s Managing Director Stewart Gilray said:
“To work with the team at Oddworld has been amazing; being able to tap the minds of Lorne Lanning, Sherry McKenna and others has been fantastic.
“It’s almost symbiotic in that when something moves forward on any of the projects we just start chatting about new items, or what if we do this,” Gilray continued. “We’re all extremely excited to breathe life into the Oddworld universe and indeed to let it breathe life into us.”
Hopefully we’ll be able to see the fruits of their labour very soon!
