THQ and 4A Games’ Metro 2033 released earlier this year to an overall positive reception, as gamers enjoyed the directed and realistic STALKER-esque first-person combat, mixed with genuinely creepy and horrific scenarios.
It seems as though the positive critical reception of Metro 2033 was coupled with a suitable amount of commercial success, as THQ’s Danny Bilson recently mentioned that a sequel, Metro 2034, is in the works. And it’ll be in stereoscopic 3D.
Talking to CVG during E3 2010, Bilson spoke about THQ’s intention to release four titles in the future that will feature the hot new 3D technology, one of which will be Metro 2033, while one of the others will be the unannounced Metro 2034:
“We’re showing Metro 2033 in 3D right now, which Nvidia is showing as one of their key demo products,” said Bilson. “We’re going to be doing a 3D version of that on Metro 2034 - the sequel. And there will be some engineering costs there, but that’s in our lowest cost centre in the world. Those games are unbelievably reasonable, they’re built in Kiev.”
Bilson further elaborated on exactly why THQ is pursuing stereoscopic 3D at such an early stage of the technology:
“Some people were confused about why we’d go into a market where there’s only one percent TVs,” Bilson continued. “It’s about a great game and a plus up on the marketing side. We’re there at low risk and high quality, but, again, we’ll have to see how that market grows and what value is there.”
If you’re a fan of the original Metro 2033, and you’re still looking forward to the announced ‘Ranger Pack’ downloadable content… well, you’ll unfortunately need to wait a little longer, it seems. There’s still no word on when it’ll be out…
