[Update] Added a few awesome Portal 2 screenshots below. [Update]
Valve Software’s Gabe Newell dropped a bit of a bomb during Sony’s E3 2010 press conference this past week by announcing that the recently delayed Portal 2 would be showing up on the PlayStation 3 on the launch of the first-person puzzle game.
In addition, and thanks to continued support for the game through the integration of the developer’s Steamworks technology, Portal 2 on the PS3 would be the “best console version of the game.”
Bold words indeed, especially if those words sideline the Xbox 360 version of Portal 2.
Steamworks support on the PS3 means that Valve will be able to offer auto updates, downloadable content and community features to gamers who own Portal 2 on that console. This makes Portal 2 on the PS3 much more like the PC version, where Valve will have the freedom to patch the game at will, rather than go through Sony’s approval process for updates and additional content.
Due to the closed nature of the Xbox 360 and its infrastructure, this support will not be available in this console’s version of Portal 2.
According to reports, Portal 2 on the PS3 will also be cross-compatible with the PC and Mac versions of the game, allowing players on these platforms to join in on each others’ online games in the included cooperative mode. This is at least, according to Valve, the current plan.
While we see if Valve can pull off this admirable feat, be sure to watch the first excellent trailer for Portal 2 below, as well as a bunch of gameplay (cam) videos to start getting real exciting:
