Square Enix full year financials released: Profits up, FF XIII sells 5 million

Square Enix has released its full fiscal year financial results for the 12 months ending March 31st, and things are looking good for the Japanese publishing giant, as sales rose 42 percent over the year previous, up to $2.07 billion (¥192 billion) as profits climbed 50 percent to $102.8 million (¥9.5 billion)

Square Enix Logo This record performance for the company was stewarded by excellent market performance by titles released last year, as five Square Enix games sold over one million units apiece, while Final Fantasy XIII sold over five million copies.

To be precise, as of March 31st 2010, Final Fantasy XIII has sold an incredible 5.5 million units around the world, with sales being evenly distributed between the regions of Japan, North America and Europe.

Dragon Quest IX’s market performance, however, is even more incredible, given that the DS title hasn’t yet seen a release outside of Japan, and has managed to sell a whopping 4.26 million units since its release in July 2009.

The released list of Square Enix’s videogame sales looks like this:

  • Final Fantasy XIII – 5.55 million units
  • Dragon Quest IX – 4.26 million units (Japan alone)
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum – 3.24 million units
  • Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days – 1.49 million units
  • Dragon Quest VI – 1.29 million units
  • Just Cause 2 – 0.92k units
  • Dissidia: Final Fantasy – 0.82k units (Japanese LtD sales – 1.81 million units)
  • Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep – 0.76k units

Looking to the future, Square Enix plans to strengthen its online presence with more online games and effective digital business models, and hopes to release the massively multiplayer online game, Final Fantasy XIV, during the next fiscal year (ending March 2011).

Square Enix also hopes to improve its portfolio of owned intellectual property (in the same vein as its acquisitions of IP such as Tomb Raider and Deus EX via the acquisition of Eidos) to enter the publisher’s next stage of growth, not being content to stagnate with its current crop of successful IP.

Related to this, it was interesting to see how Square Enix ranked the strength of its range of intellectual property according to sales potential, with Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts grouped right at the top.
