Massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) developer Cryptic recently announced that work has halted on a console version of the currently PC-only MMOG, Star Trek Online.
This announcement arrives after the news that the developer would not be delivering a console version of its other MMOG, Champions Online.
Speaking to videogame consumer website Videogamer.com, executive producer Craig Zinkievich said of the decision to halt development on Star Trek Online for consoles:
“It’s pretty much in the same boat as the Champions console version right now. It’s something we can readily do in terms of technology. We’ve had it up and running on certain consoles, and had plans and designs in order to take advantage of those platforms.
“But as it stands right now it’s a little difficult to make that final leap on the business side of things,” Zinkievich continued. “So, currently, just like Champions, the console version of Star Trek Online is on the back burner.”
You’ll remember that when Star Trek Online was first announced, platforms intended for release included PC ‘and consoles,’ which must have come as a surprise to console-owning Trekkies and Trekkers the world over.
‘Tis is a shame.
