The announcement that a new X-COM game, or XCOM, is currently in development must have sent chills of excitement up the spines of older, hardcore gamers, and even if you’ve got reservations over the fact that the game will be a re-imagining of the original franchise in the first-person perspective, surely some of those doubts would have been quietened by the news that the team that brought you Bioshock 2, 2K Marin, is behind the helm.
News surfacing today has revealed, however, that the core team at 2K Marin will in fact not be working on this new XCOM game, but will instead be created at another developer, 2K Marin.
Confused? Hang on a minute longer.
Bioshock 2 was created, primarily, by the ‘newly’ formed 2K Games studio, 2K Marin, with a good dollop of help from fellow 2K Games studio, 2K Australia.
Recently, however, 2K Australia has become an official sister studio to 2K Marin, and has thus been renamed 2K Marin as well, or “the Canberra, Australia arm of 2K Marin.”
This Canberra, Australia-based development team will be the studio handling development of the new XCOM game.
Is that cleared up? Good.
While there’s definitely no need to worry about whether or not 2K Marin/Australia is able to deliver the goods (this is the team that helped define the original Bioshock and Bioshock 2, after all), but it is a bit of a deceptive ploy by 2K Games to claim that XCOM is in development at 2K Marin, without explaining the situation.
Why not just come out and say 2K Australia is developing it?
