Hideo Kojima, head of Kojima Productions and creator of the incredibly successful Metal Gear series of games (amongst others) has thrown down a gauntlet to himself, saying that if the next videogame project that he’s involved with is a failure, he will “have to the leave the industry.”
It seems Kojima wants to tackle a particular theme or subject matter in his next game – one that sounds quite risky and may turn certain audience members away if it’s not handled just right.
In a Twitter tweet (translated by AndriaSang) Kojima wrote:
“The next project will challenge a certain type of taboo. If I mess up, I’ll probably have to leave the industry. However, I don’t want to pass by avoiding that. I turn 47 this year. It’s been 24 years since I started making games.
“Today, I got an ally who would happily support me in that risk. Although it’s just one person. For a start, it’s good.”
Prior to this, Kojima had written about his next project, and the fact that he had already entered ‘Next Project Mode,’ despite the fact that work on Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was still piling on.
Kojima also mentioned “mecha” in his post, which lead to rampant rumours and excitement surrounding the possibility that the developer’s next title may in fact be another Zone of the Enders title. From the post:
“I’m thinking about the casting for my next title. The project plan still hasn’t reached a detailed level, but everything is advancing simultaneously in my head.
“Title, game design, story, characters, setting research, the mecha that appear, casting, graphic direction, sound, beginning and ending, the major story sequences. It comes together naturally in my head.”
Which was followed by another tweet:
“There’s still a mountain of PW work piled up, but my head is moving towards ‘Next Title Mode.’ This is not good.”
There’s no rest when your name is Hideo Kojima.
