It’s not everyday that a developer will outright admit one version of their game runs better than the other, and it’s certainly not everyday that a developer is able to admit that the PlayStation 3 version of their game runs better than its Xbox 360 counterpart, but that’s exactly what’s happened with Crysis 2.
Speaking about the difficulties some developers face when creating titles for the PS3 versus other platforms, Crytek’s director of business Carl Jones commented:
“We haven’t found it more difficult to develop for PS3. We’re lucky in the fact that we’ve come to the generation slightly later than other people. The ones who were trying to build the first technology and games were surprised at how different the PS3 was. We took our time and worked out the right way to approach it.
“At the moment,” Jones continues, “we’re getting slightly more performance from PS3 compared to 360. [But] I’m very confident that products using CryEngine 3 are going to come out as the best looking, or at least in the top three, on every platform.”
When speaking to videogame consumer site CVG at the recent Crysis 2 press event in New York, however, Crytek’s Cevat Yerli claimed that the PC version of Crysis 2 looks better than both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, which is kind of expected should you have the required rig to run it at the highest settings.
When asked why the Xbox 360 version of Crysis 2 was chosen to show off the game at the press event, Yerli responded:
“PC is the best looking version, yeah. But if I had shown it on PC, it would have been like… okay, Crysis 2 is on console, but they’re not showing the console version. So we wanted to go with console.”
Any way you look at it, Crysis 2 is going to be a monster of a game, graphically at least, with all kinds of technological bells and whistles powering the title.
We’ll just have to wait and see if it plays as well as it looks…
