A new report released by the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices (SACHD) service has forecast that Sony’s PlayStation 3 will eventually outsell both Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii, and go on to reach approximately 127 million units sold by 2014.
The report, called “Taming the Waves: Games Console Life Cycles and Platform Competition,” notes that while the Wii is by far the current market dominator, the PS3 will continue to be a viable commercial platform for games and media well after the Wii’s successor has been released, and predicts Nintendo’s home console will only go on to sell a total of 103 million units in its lifetime.
SACHD principal analyst and the report’s author, David Mercer, explained the report’s findings:
“Nintendo has done a great job with the Wii in bringing console games to new audiences. But its sales are now falling, particularly in mature markets, and its installed base will peak in 2011. Ownership of both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will hit their highest points between 2012 and 2014.”
The report also expects home consoles will reach a global installed base of over 220 million units combined by the end of 2010, while ownership of current generation consoles will peak in 2011, at which point hardware vendors will need to begin to introduce the next generation of consoles in order to spark new industry growth. Mercer adds:
“Console industry cycles have given the industry major planning challenges for many years. There are signs that this volatility may be moderating as platforms add home entertainment and social networking services beyond pure gaming.”

LOL . . . we've seen this story for what . . . 3 years now? and yet still the PS3 is in last place month after month of overall sales.
Too funny. What are they releasing that's going to beat Natal? PoS3 . . . Lair Rocked!
well, unless you're retarded you can see that the ps2 HAS sold for 10 years. And the ps3 WILL sell for 10 years. The 360 will of course be ripped off market like it was last time and loose all support when the next version comes out in a couple of years.
So, while the wii and 360 are gone the ps3 will continue to sell... It's not rocket science.
elijahblake, the Wii is this generation's PS2 - not the strongest machine and plenty of gimmicks. That is why it sold for 10 years (and is possibly why the Wii will sell the same). The gamecube was bigger, brighter, stronger, faster, but that couldn't save it from being last place. The PS3 is a great machine but I don't see it repeating the PS2's success.
with everyone going to HD and now even 3D HD there's no way the wii will sell for 10 years, it's been out dated since it was introduced and now that ps3 and 360 are coming out with motion controls, what would be the reason to buy it?
Had you rather buy a wii that has unrealistic motion controls in Standard Def, or buy a ps3 that has 1:1 motion tracking that can even put you on the tv, and all in HD? Not to mention the ps3 is upgradeable to 3D.
So i definitely see the ps3 being around for 10 years, and whether it has the success the ps2 had or not who knows only time will tell.
