Scribblenauts follow-up releasing later this year

Scribblenauts' MaxwellThe latest issue of Nintendo Power has revealed that a follow-up to last year’s puzzle platform game Scribblenauts is in the works at the original developer, 5th Cell, and looks set to remedy the complaints aimed at the first title, while adding new levels, improved controls and 10 000 more words.

Scribblenauts for the Nintendo DS was a truly ‘magical’ title that seemed to have been created by a Genie of some kind, as the game allowed you to type in a noun (basically anything, from sword, tree and bear, to kraken, space ship and ninja) and it would appear right there on your screen, animated and ready to carry out (basically) correct actions based on its real-world properties – a sword could be used to cut things, a bear would look for honey, a ninja would jump around and fight, and a kraken would… sit in a heap and lash out at anything that got near it.

This ability to spawn in thousands of objects to solve puzzles and experiment with garnered a huge group of wide-eyed fans, but players of Scribblenauts soon found out that the biggest flaw in the game was the twitchy controls, which kind of put a damper on things.

With the follow up to Scribblenauts, however, 5th Cell aims to fix this problem with better stylus and D-pad controls, a better implemented ‘fixed’ camera, as well as significant updates to the physics system (so when objects simply touch one another, they don’t go rocketing off into space).

Scribblenauts 2 (for lack of a better, official term) will also include 120 new and improved levels, a fleshed out level editor, a new hint system, and more words (nouns).

The biggest leap that I can see though is the addition of 10 000 adjectives (to add modifiers to the nouns, like hungry hippo), so you’ll be able to more accurately describe what kind of object you would like to spawn into the game, further deepening the ‘simulation.’

Sounds like fans of the original Scribblenauts, and those that were put off by the complaints levelled at the original, will have something awesome to look forward to when the sequel releases on the DS in the Fall of this year!

Jipeeeee! This is gonna be awesome. The 1st game had so much potential but was flawed, like mentioned in the article.

Can't wait

I'm definitely looking forward to this one!

I was one of those people who was put off by the control complaints, and also the general malaise over how the magic of the game wears off after 15 minutes of playing around with different combinations of objects (from what I've heard).
