Last year, Modern Warfare 2 was more popular than Twilight, Harry Potter and Lady Gaga in the UK

According to the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) in the UK, there was absolutely no stopping Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (tell us something we don’t know) in 2009, not only in terms of pure software sales, but overall entertainment media as well, outselling chart-topping music albums and blockbuster movies to become the best performing piece of entertainment in the UK last year.

First, let’s look at the list of best selling videogames in the UK last year, according to ERA:

  • 1.) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision Blizzard) - 2,926,637 units
  • 2.) FIFA 10 (Electronic Arts) - 2,155,697 units
  • 3.) Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo) - 1,488,797 units
  • 4.) Wii Fit (Nintendo) - 1,246,461 units
  • 5.) Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo) - 968,282 units
  • 6.) Assassin’s Creed II (Ubisoft) - 920,910 units
  • 7.) Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo) - 917,863 units
  • 8.) Mario & Sonic at Olympic Winter Games (Sega) - 825,027 units
  • 9.) Call of Duty: World at War (Activision Blizzard) - 769,726 units
  • 10.) FIFA 09 (Electronic Arts) - 713,314 units

Take note of the top three, as you’ll be seeing them pop up again while you look over the top ten best selling entertainment products in the UK in 2009:

  • 1.) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision Blizzard) - 2,926,637 units
  • 2.) Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince (Warner Home Video) - 2,193,700 units
  • 3.) FIFA 10 (Electronic Arts) - 2,155,697 units
  • 4.) Quantum of Solace (20th Century Fox) - 2,040,229 units
  • 5.) Twilight (E1 Entertainment) - 1,815,543 units
  • 6.) I Dreamed a Dream - Susan Boyle (Sony Music) - 1,714,369 units
  • 7.) Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo) - 1,488,797 units
  • 8.) The Fame - Lady Gaga (Universal Music) - 1,458,289 units
  • 9.) Slumdog Millionaire (20th Century Fox) - 1,383,838 units
  • 10.) Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen (Paramount) - 1,362,020 units

Modern Warfare 2 is ahead of Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince by over 700 000 units… quite a margin, I’m sure you’ll agree, and for an entertainment product that retails for quite a bit more, too.

I wonder which games (and how many) will make their way into 2010’s list of top-selling entertainment products, seeing as how the list of big movie releases so far is a little dry… oh no wait, Toy Story 3 is releasing this year isn’t it? That’ll be an interesting battle, for sure!

What other big movies am I missing (that’ll release in time to get a DVD/Blu-ray to market)?
