Late last week, Warner Bros. Interactive announced that a new game in the epic Lord of the Rings franchise will be making its way to PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2011 in the form of the cooperative action role-playing game, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, based on the novels written by J.R.R. Tolkien, rather than the trilogy of films.
Currently in development at Snowblind Studios (Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, Champions of Norrath) in association with Middle-earth Enterprises, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North will allow up to three players to “form their own Fellowship to fight Sauron’s forces in the North” in a mature, online, cooperative RPG set in Middle-earth during the War of the Ring, with the usual range of features such as character customisation, upgradeable skills and special abilities, while exploring areas unique to the Lord of the Rings universe.
President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Martin Tremblay expanded on the premise:
“With The Lord of the Rings: War in the North we are taking a mature approach to the widely celebrated property with authentic portrayals of battles and all new storylines.
“Utilising the award-winning and passionate development team at Snowblind Studios, we are looking to evolve the RPG experience and deliver The Lord of the Rings game fans have been waiting for.”
