[Update 3] The PS3 online and offline ‘situation’ is now over and has corrected itself, although you may still have to manually adjust a few settings, while unsynced Trophy data (before March 1st) is now unfortunately lost [End of Update 3]
[Update 2] Sony believes that they may have found a solution to the problems plaguing PS3 owners, and that a fix may be available within 24 hours, but for now warns PS3 owners not to use the console until further notice [End of Update 2]
[Update 1] Just in case you’re not aware - owners of the original ‘fat’ PS3 are currently experiencing issues playing games and accessing content offline as well, in addition to having problems connecting to the PlayStation Network.
It’s currently recommended (by internet theorists, mind) not to use your PS3 at this time, until a fix is determined. [End of Update 1]
Many PlayStation Network users are reporting the inability to connect to the service this morning (and yesterday), and Sony are currently working to fix the problems, as reported by a new post on the US PlayStation Blog.
According to the post, not only have Sony’s engineers “narrowed down the issue” and are currently “working to restore [the] service,” PS3 ‘slim’ units are connecting to the PlayStation Network as normal. From the post:
“We’re aware that many of you are having difficulty connecting to the PlayStation Network this evening. Those of you with “slim” PS3s (the 120/250 GB models) appear to be unaffected.
“Know that we have narrowed down the issue and have engineers working to restore service even as you read this. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, and genuinely appreciate your patience while we work to resolve this.
“In the meantime, you may want to follow our Twitter account for the latest updates.”

I have just noticed the problem with signing in on my ps3, I was playing NFS Undercover & Red Faction Guerilla & my Trophies have gone? Will I get them back? can anyone let me know will I get them back & will I be able to sign back into psn.
i know i want mine back on thought i could have a lazy day today on the ps3 now all this happens i need to know when it goin to b workin again plzzzzzz help
hi darren im not sure myself in the same boat as u turned my computer on this mornin at 4am and has been the same all day not signing in i cant play fifa coz of the trophys we need it sorting or confirmation when it bk on
Hi people,
Current 'internet theory' (the theory that takes over when corporations fail to make official, up-to-the-minute statements) is saying that either after a 24hr period, everything should reset and 'things' will be back to normal (as these problems are related to some calendar system), or we'll be needing a firmware update from Sony in order to fix the problems.
I have my money on the latter, rather than the former.
We'll be trying to keep you up-to-date with what's going on as information is available, but currently, I don't think it would be a good idea to try and forge ahead and play your games 'as usual,' as it may reset and save your settings in current configurations you don't want them to be in. ;)
I was playing borderlands about 1am this morning when i noticed my borderlands trophies had disappeared, tried signing onto the psn and couldn't get online and then i noticed when i turn my ps3 on now the time and date always resets to 31/12 23:31 so it's new years eve every day for me lol Hope this gets sorted soon
I just started modern warfare 2 yesterday and could not get the game to load and was driving me crazy with network connection and trophy errors, now I realize that there is a larger problem....I have not felt this frustrated since I fought with my dad over the the evening news becasue I wanted to play Zaxxon on my Colecovison
Wow, Zaxxon!
Welp, if there was ever a time to pull out the 'ole Colecovision, dust it off, plug 'er in and play some more Zaxxon, that time is now.
cries
I also am having this problem but i also hear that this problem is only happening on the older 'fat' ps3. The new 'slim' ps3s apparently are working fine.
Yes, as far as I have read, that is correct - the newer 'slim' PS3 model is unaffected by the problems that owners of the older 'fat' system are currently experiencing.
I noticed yesterday when i came back from my friends house (he has a slim PS3) that when i tried singing in to play some MW2 w/ him and overuse my baby (RPG) that everytime i tried signing in 3 seconds later it says an error occured (8000501) or some crazy number like that and i tried signing in OVER AND OVER about 7-8 times then i decided its because of all the crap i have saved so i went deleting almost all the things i didnt need so i went to my themes folder and saw something that said CORRUPTED DATA and when i saw this i thought HMMM maybe this could be the problem so i deleted it and got no results whatsoever and now im scared that i might not be able to get back to me former level and erase ALL of my things using the games i play frequently i NEED my PS3 BACK!!!!
My ps3 is working again, unfortunately the trophies i earned yesterday in borderlands weren't picked up, hoping i can get them on the 2nd playthrough tho and i just hope that the ps3 doesn't think that i already have them and they are lost for good but the main thing is the ps3 is back online and seems to be fine
