After the surprise announcement that Super Mario Galaxy 2 would release in North America on May 23rd, brand new sets of lively screenshots and gameplay footage has been released in celebration of the date, while a few new details have surfaced to fill us in on what we can expect from this new adventure.
Well for one thing, the previously held idea that Super Mario Galaxy 2 would comprise mostly new content is outdated, as Nintendo has informed the world that every level is new, and you’ll be able to play through these new levels with a friend as the game supports up to two players, although it’s not yet clear if this means anything beyond the first Super Mario Galaxy’s feature of second player assistance, or true cooperative play with two little plumbers running around a single level… wouldn’t that be neat?
Additionally, and as you can tell from the screenshots, you can ride Mario’s trusty ‘steed’ Yoshi in certain stages of Super Mario Galaxy 2, who can eat ‘Dash Peppers’ to run up vertical walls, and ‘Blimp Fruit’ to float like a balloon.
New powers and collectibles were also revealed, such as Mario’s ability to drill down into planets, and a new pick-up call the Comet Metal, which if collected, will unlock harder levels for more skilled players to complete.
You can continue enjoying the rest of the newly released Super Mario Galaxy 2 screenshots below, and be sure to watch two videos features new gameplay footage from the game as well:
