Coming off of the major high of the end of year sales in December in the US last year, January’s videogame industry sales figures (which includes software, hardware and accessories) are looking positively dopey in comparison, as sales tracker NPD reports an overall market decline in the US of 13% compared to the same period last year, dropping to $1.17 billion.
This decline can mainly be attributed to a drop in hardware sales, as revenue in this segment dropped by 21% down to $353.7 million for the month of January, which in itself can be ascribed to console price cuts across the board which drove unit demand, but generated less revenue as a result.
The only console to have a positive sales growth compared to January 2009 was the PlayStation 3, despite being outsold by its rival the Xbox 360.
Sales of videogame accessories, on the other hand, enjoyed a slight 2% increase, up to $217 million.
Console hardware sales for January in the US follow below, accompanied by each console’s particular percentage growth compared to January 2009:
Hardware Sales
- Wii: 465 800 (-31 percent)
- Nintendo DS: 422,200 (-17 percent)
- Xbox 360: 422 200 (-17 percent)
- PlayStation 3: 276 900 (+36 percent)
- PSP: 100 100 (-42 percent)
- PlayStation 2: 41 600 (-59 percent)
US software sales for January were lead by Nintendo’s new ‘evergreen’ title, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which saw fierce competition from the, at the time of this data’s compilation, relatively new release in Mass Effect 2.
Other evergreen Nintendo titles make an appearance on the list, as do both console versions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, while newcomers Army of Two: The 40th Day and Darksiders also feature.
Overall, and for the month of January in the US, software sales declined by 12% to $597.9 million.
