PlayStation 3 to receive security firmware update [Update]
[Update] The latest (non-optional) PS3 firmware update is available now. [End of Update]
A recent announcement on the US PlayStation Blog has revealed that the PlayStation 3 is scheduled to receive a new firmware update very soon. Don’t be alarmed.
From the post:
“A new PS3 system software update, v3.55, will be released soon. This is a minor update that adds a security patch.”
See what I told you? There’s nothing to worry about!

will it be optional i wonder?
Apparently not - I need to confirm, but the patch may already be available and Gran Turismo 5 players are reporting that they need to download this update before they can get the new GT5 patch... and play online, obviously.
OK, the update is now live... but doh! I forgot to check if it's optional... ;(
Ah, checked - nope, not optional! ;(
yup - downloading it now so i can play UC2 online. wouldn't it be cool if we only had to download the stuff that is new in the update, instead of the full 170mb (and growing) patch every time. how does it work on xbox 360? the patches for the dashboard and games seem much smaller than on ps3 somehow...
