Call of Duty: Black Ops destroys UK sales records

As expected, Activision and Treyarch’s blockbuster first-person shooter, Call of Duty: Black Ops, has released into the wild and gone on to become the No. 1 selling game in the UK this past week.

Not only that, according to sales tracking company for the region, Chart Track, Black Ops is “by far the biggest ever launch of any game.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops managed to sell 2 million units in the UK over its first five days on sale, and generated a whopping £81.9 million in revenue.

This figure represents a 13% increase over Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in terms of unit sales and a 21% increase over that game in terms of revenue – Modern Warfare 2 sold 1.8 million units and generated £67.4 million during the same period of time.

This easily makes Black Ops the new sales record holder for the region, as Chart Track informs us that the game “grossed more than the entire UK entertainment software market over the previous two weeks combined.”

55% of Black Ops sales were seen on the Xbox 360, while the PlayStation 3 version of the game saw 42% of total copies sold.

In addition, this past week (Week 45 of 2010) has become the biggest sales week of all time in the UK, with a total of £113.8 million in total, beating previous best of £107.6 million way back in week 52 of 2008!

Call of Duty: Black Ops isn’t the only contributor to this massive total, however - the release of Microsoft’s Kinect also played a part as it released during the same week as Activision’s industry-stomping title.

This news follows the announcement late last week revealing that combined sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops in North America and the UK added up to 5.6 million units on day one of the game’s launch, while generating $360 million in revenue, making the game the biggest launch of an entertainment product ever.
