Harmonix has announced that all downloadable content (DLC) released for Rock Band after October 26th will be specific to Rock Band 3, and incompatible with previous entries to the series, the original Rock Band and Rock Band 2.
All tracks released before that date, however, will remain compatible with those titles, while new Rock Band Network songs will be playable across all versions of the franchise.
Why?
Speaking to Joystiq, a representative for Harmonix said that the reason future DLC is only compatible with Rock Band 3 is “due to the new authoring standards, inclusion of new instruments, new lighting / venue cues, etc.”
Luckily for Rock Band and Rock Band 2 players, you won’t be able to accidentally purchase Rock Band 3-specific DLC, as these songs won’t show up in those titles’ in-game store.
Thank goodness for that!
