Now that BlizzonCon 10 is over, we can look through the settling dust to see what news and interesting morsels of information we can discover… and it seems as though Blizzard Entertainment is keen to let fans know that the developer’s upcoming action RPG extravaganza, Diablo III, is coming along just fine.

Amongst the reveals during the weekend of fantasy and science fiction revelry included the fact that there will be a closed beta for Diablo III, while the fifth and final character class, the Demon Hunter, was also showcased for the first time.

Speaking to G4, lead designer on Diablo III Jay Wilson said that a ‘Blizzard friends and family’ closed beta would commence at some point in the future to test out all of the game’s features ‘in the wild.’

While that may come as a bit of a disappointment to some, keep in mind that Blizzard is probably keen to stress-test the game with a wider population of gamers who are dead-set on testing and breaking everything possible, just so that Diablo III is as polished and complete on launch as it can be, which more than likely would mean a closed public beta at some point.

Wilson also confirmed that, on launch, Diablo III would not support modifications of any kind, user interface or not, so don’t get your hopes up on that front either.

One last bit of interesting information that was squeezed out of Wilson was confirmation that Diablo III is “way over half-way” done… but again, keep in mind that this is a Blizzard game, and even if the game was complete, we would probably still have to wait another year to see it!

Those fellows and fellowettes are perfectionists!

Another cool piece of new information was revealed on Blizzard’s website, with talk of a Player VS Player (PvP) option to be included in Diablo III. From the site:

“PvP (short for ‘player versus player’ combat) has had a storied history in the Diablo series. For Diablo III, we’ve decided to take it in a new direction to ensure that it’s deep, organized, frantic, and fun.”

“Diablo III’s PvP battles are fought in arenas spread out across the world of Sanctuary. These arenas aren’t random - they’re all unique, designed with differing amounts of terrain and cover. You participate in PvP using the character of your choice, with access to all of the gear and skills you’ve accumulated playing the game in single-player or cooperative mode.”

”Our aim for Diablo III’s PvP is to set you up with dangerous, exciting gladiatorial matches, let you battle it out with other players at your own pace, and allow you to proudly display your rewards. We’ve added a robust system to remove the obstructions that may have kept you out of the action, so that you can focus on what really matters: answering the age-old question of ‘who would win in a fight’ - with a gauntlet to the face.”

There’s also mention of ranked matches, which you can find out about over here:

And lastly, Blizzard revealed the final character class to be included in Diablo III – the Demon Hunter – who joins the Witch Doctor, the Wizard, the Monk and the Barbarian as the fifth playable class in the game.
