Project Natal runs at 30 FPS, developer video discusses possibilities

After the announcement at CES 2010 that Project Natal would release in time for the holidays this year, a bit of technical information was revealed regarding the motion sensing technology, while an additional developer video (featuring Peter Molyneux, amongst others) has been released, discussing the future possibilities of the device.

Project Natal DevicePrincipal Researcher for Microsoft Research, Andrew Fitzgibbon, told the crowd gathered at the conference: “What Natal does, is it evaluates effectively trillions of body configurations every frame. We’ve made it do that 30 times a second.”

So while this doesn’t necessarily dictate the speed of the game utilising Project Natal’s camera system that recognises a user’s movement in 3D space, continuing to allow future games to run at 60 frames per second, it will give developers pause for thought when trying to determine what frame rate they will want to lock their games at.

Running a game’s video at 60 frames per second, and only allowing input every 30 frames per second, for example, is bound to cause some headaches, and possibly even lead to unresponsive feeling games.

That’s up to the developers to decide, though, and speaking of those technology and creative wizards, a new developer interview video has been posted speaking to a number of developers currently working with the Project Natal technology, and why they’re so excited about the future.

Comments:

The video is another teaser!! Don't they have a definite date when the Project Natal will be released? I'm sure thousands of gamers are dying to know this.

Microsoft like to tease, you should know that by now! There is no definite date yet, all we know is that Project Natal will be coming this Spring. But then again I suppose a timeline in a whole season is better than nothing!
