Nintendo of America, not content to wait until the NPD Group release the official US sales data for December and 2009 on the 14th of January, have jumped the gun by releasing their own sales estimates.
According to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, American consumers continued to clamour after the Wii console, buying an estimated 3 million units over December in the United States. Not to be left out in the cold, the publisher believes that its ever popular Nintendo DS and DSi set a new all time calendar year US sales record for any console or handheld system.
Nintendo also believes it continued to dominate on the software side of things. They estimate that lifetime sales of New Super Mario Bros. Wii (launched across the US on the 15th of November) in the US are reaching the 4 million mark.
And of course, no press release would be complete without a word from Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “The millions of people who bought Nintendo hardware during the holidays can look forward to enjoying great games on those systems now and in the future. The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for Nintendo DS, and Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are all currently providing Nintendo fans with amazing experiences and fun adventures for the whole family.”
