SEGA no longer interested in developing mature Wii titles

After taking a bit of a gamble on publishing mature titles such as The Conduit and MadWorld on the Wii, and seeing poor sales of those titles as a result of the seemingly impenetrable and unpredictable market surrounding the console, SEGA has decided not to pursue the development of any further non family-friendly titles for the Wii.

SEGA LogoAccording to SEGA of America’s studio director, Constantine Hantzopoulos, and once again speaking to the guys of the ‘4 Guys 1Up’ podcast, the publisher will “probably not” develop or publish any more mature Wii titles. Hantzopoulos said:

“Are we going to do more mature titles for the Wii? Probably not. I have to say that it was a space that was open and we took a gamble on it.

“It’s like, ‘Wow, there’s no mature games on the Wii. Is there an audience out there?’ We did some research, it said there was an audience out there.”

After the subsequent failure of SEGA’s House of the Dead: Overkill and EA’s Dead Space: Extraction on the Wii, and Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the DS, its seems as though publishers and developers may try and refrain from putting any further development time and effort into mature titles for Nintendo’s consoles.

All eyes will be on the sales numbers of Ubisoft’s Red Steel 2 and Grasshopper Manufacture’s No More Heroes 2 (also published by Ubisoft) to see if the Nintendo console nut can be cracked at all.

Looking further along, another indicator of any success more mature inclined titles can receive will be the sales performance of Nintendo and Team Ninja’s Metroid: Other M collaboration.

Hopefully, someone can find some success in this area on the Wii to encourage the development of more mature-rated titles for the platform in the future - man cannot live by Wii Fit alone.
