Nintendo’s popular Wii Play has become the best-selling game of all time in the United States. That’s according to the latest data released by tracking firm The NPD Group who came to this conclusion after compiling fifteen years worth of videogames sales in the US.
Wii Play, released back in 2006, overcome competition from both the Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto series to triumph, despite being a Wii exclusive title. As many of you will know Wii Play is a compilation of mini-games that comes bundled with a Wii Remote. Guitar Hero III came in second on the list, being available on no less than four platforms, with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (available on two platforms) finishing third.
Wii Play is not the only title bringing a smile to Nintendo’s face, however, with Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii both earning a spot in the Top 10 at numbers 5 and 6 respectively.
As expected Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was also a strong contender finishing at number 7, with two other Call of Duty games also making the cut (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at number 4 and Call of Duty: World at War at number 9). The rest of the chart is filled up with Madden NFL 07 in eighth and Namco Museum at tenth.
Last October NPD revealed that Wii Play had sold 11.1 million units in the US, with Guitar Hero III trailing with 10.2 million on all platforms and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas selling a combined total of 9.8 million on the original Xbox and PS2. Modern Warfare 2 has sold 8.82 million in the US to date with Activision Blizzard reporting that the popular title has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.
