In comments made to Game Informer last month, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has confirmed that a follow-up to last year’s excellent-but-slightly-flawed DJ Hero is in the works, and somewhat dubiously admitted that they didn’t “get it right” the first time around.
Speaking about the publisher’s commitment to new and original intellectual property (IP) for the long haul, Kotick said:
“…if you’re going to make a commitment to doing something original, the odds are that you’re not going to get it right on the first chance,” referencing efforts by internal Activision developers Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Raven and Neversoft as studios who had gone and created an original IP, but not necessarily done the best job of it with their first game.
Kotick applied this philosophy to DJ Hero, saying that despite worse than expected sales, Activision will “stick with” the franchise:
“I think DJ Hero is a really innovative product. I can’t wait for you to see next year’s. That’s the thing; we’re sticking with it. We’ll stick with it and get it right. But it’s going to be less games, better games. That’s our strategy.”
