Sony responds to December 2009 NPD: Staying positive

Sony LogoAll things considered, Sony had quite a good December last year, according to NPD’s report, managing to sell the second most home consoles in the month with 1.36 million PlayStation 3s (representing an 87% year-over-over year rise), trotting out a few hundred thousand PSP and PS2s, and gaining more hardcore shooter credibility with a further 1.12 million copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sold.

Sony also announced that for the year of 2009, the PlayStation brand contributed $5.1 billion, or 26%, in overall revenue to the videogame industry, which is actually down from 2008 ($6.4 billion, with 30% market share) and 2007 ($6.2 billion, with 35% market share).

Gazing a little bit into the future, Sony changed the focus to the titles and technologies to come, as SCEA senior director of corporate communications Patrick Seybold said:

“2010 will offer entirely new gaming experiences to consumers as we launch MAG, God of War III, 3D gaming, and the new motion controller this year.”

Sony also shared the news that revenue in December for its online PlayStation Network saw a 155% year-over-year increase in North America, making it the single highest month of revenue for the storefront ever, aided by the most downloaded paid games in the form of Final Fantasy VIII and PixelJunk Shooter.
