Well, that’s one less thing PS3 and Xbox 360 owners have over Wii owners.
Yes, that’s right – Netflix’s magical online video streaming service is officially coming to the Wii, amidst the continual rumours and hinting that we’ve had to endure for the last few months.
Starting this ‘Spring’ (March to May), those of you with a Wii, living in the US, subscribing to Netflix (with a $9-a-month minimum subscription) and a connection to Mother Internet, will be able to stream movies and TV shows of your choice straight through the pipes, as nature intended and at your leisure.
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said of the Netflix deal; “[From] from Day 1, we always had other capabilities within the console. [This] is a continuation of an effort to bring more and more entertainment to consumers who interact with the Wii.”
When the service is first offered, and like the PS3, the implementation will be a bit clumsy, so you’ll need to use a streaming disc to get things going, which Nintendo and Netflix will provide free of charge.
Unlike the Xbox 360 and PS3, however, the Wii won’t be able to output high definition video, so your video viewing through Netflix on the Wii will be limited to standard definition.
