Gross is right.
Activision Blizzard, with chest puffed out and trumpets blowing, has announced that last year’s industry destroying Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has grossed a mind-boggling $1 billion worldwide since its release on November 10th 2009.
In a press release, the mega-publisher continued to harp on the same chord (that Modern Warfare 2 had sold an estimated $550 million worldwide in five days), but went on to claim that the outstanding number noted above ($1 billion) had recently been crossed, according to Activision’s internal estimates.
CEO of Activision Blizzard, Bobby Kotick ululated: “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has exceeded our expectations and shattered theatrical box office and video game records. There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game.”
Additionally, the ELSPA (Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association) has confirmed that Modern Warfare 2 was the best selling game in the UK for the whole of 2009, despite it’s relatively late release date, followed by Fifa 10 and Wii Sports Resort.
