Winners of Intel’s ‘Level Up 2009’ announced

The winners of Intel’s ‘Intel Level Up Game Demo Challenge 2009’ have been announced, a competition that called on independent game developers to create a game demo that took advantage of the computer chip maker’s various processing and graphics technologies.

Intel LogoThe winners received all kinds of cool hardware and software, which is sure to boost their game development efficiency, as well as the opportunity to receive extra marketing exposure for their games.

“Yakov Sumygin was born in Turkmenistan and is currently working in Korea with plans to return to Russia. He graduated from the University of Ashgabat where he started programming games in Basic. Unfortunately, these masterpieces, such as a ray cast engine height support, were not saved.

“He is fond of programming games, boxing, and Russian literature. In his free time he is working on a game engine and hopes to find a publisher for his games.”

Spin Tires:

“Pavel Aleksandrovich Zagrebelnyy is currently studying for his Master of Science at The Saint-Petersburg University of Electronics “LETI”, having recently received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Technology (Diploma with Honors). He has worked as a system programmer at First-Interactive focusing on oil rig simulators in Russia and Norway.

“He is currently employed at Saber Interactive (game development, Russia-USA), as a rendering programmer.”

Inferus:

  • First place for Best Game-on-the-Go, Third place for Best Game on Intel Graphics

“Kevin Gadd is a programmer and game designer from northern California. Kevin has previously worked as a programmer and game designer on the critically acclaimed Guild Wars series, and more recently worked on the IMVU 3D instant messenger software and social networking website.”

Germination:

  • Second place for Best Game-on-the-Go

“When Bradley Wesson was about 9 years old, his family got their first computer, a 75Mhz Pentium running Windows 95 preloaded with QBasic. He spent a lot of time in QBasic developing my first programs ranging from a virtual keyboard to hang man.

“After a short while, he found 3D Game Studio and developed a Mario-style game with the help of a tutorial before moving on to try other game types. Brad decided to expand his game programmer knowledge and discovered C++. Since that time he has developed mainly in C++ using first the Win32 API for rendering, then Direct3D, and finally OpenGL.

“He is currently employed at Holopoint Interactive working on game-related projects whenever possible, while studying Digital Media full time at Flinders University.”

Rise of Pirates:

“Stefans Keiss is new to the game industry and is 18 years old. He has his own company (FlashiPhone game development) with offices in three countries and more than 25 workers. He is finding the time to get caught up on what he’s missed in the game development field.”

The Ray Trace Game:

  • Third place for Best Threaded Game

“Eugene Klyuchnikov is a 26 year old Java programmer for Alcatel-Lucent. At the age of 9 years old, he discovered the world of video games on a ZX-Spectrum computer assembled by his father.

“In the early years he studied Basic and Assembler, the only languages available. His first significant achievements were the implementation of graphic effect and the icon-editor in MS Excel’97. He later created a few games to test his new skills in C++ and DirectX. In 2000 Eugene entered the Syktyvkar State University in the newly opened “applied mathematics” department.

“Each year he participates in the quarterfinals of the ACM championship and has twice participated in the semifinals. He has taught classes in “Foundation of Java” and “Visual Effects and Computer Graphics.” He is grateful for the support of his wife in all competitions and for midnight dates with his computer. He live by the motto: “Our job to know everything.” ”

Rise of Flight:

  • The First Great Air War: Judge’s Choice Award Winner

“Albert Zhiltsov is a game producer at the neoqb company. Albert has been working in the game development industry since 2004. He became interested in this area as an active member of the fan community of a legendary game “IL-2: Battleplane.”

“Among virtual pilots he is known as Loft. Albert participated in both Russian and International gaming contests for “IL-2: Battleplane” and repeatedly became a winner in the “Individual Air Fight” and “Paired Air Fight” categories. Being a true fan of virtual aviation he assembled a group of developers, which created “IL-2: Battleplane” add-ons, like the IL2 Server Commander (multifunctional application for “IL -2: Battleplane” servers management) and “ADW-Air Domination War” (MMO add-on for “IL-2: Battleplane”).

“Today these add-ons are still used by many game fans all over the world. Albert started developing games in a small team of only 3 people which has turned into a company with more than 50 employees. They strive for helping gamers all over the world to fulfill their dreams in the virtual sky.”
