Batman sales skyrocket as Wolfenstein disappoints in the market

Batman Arkham Asylum Small NPD videogame sales numbers were released last week, generated by the NPD market research group in the US, which reveals units sales for the top selling videogame hardware and software in the US only.

With an extended look at sales numbers it’s been revealed that id Software/Raven Software’s World War II themed paranormal shooter, Wolfenstein, performed extremely poorly in the launch days (from August 25th) leading up to when the sales numbers were collated (August 29th), which is typically the period when sales for a game are at their highest.

According to the NPD numbers, Wolfenstein sold only 59 000 copies on the Xbox 360, nearly 30 000 copies on the PS3 and 17 000 units on the PC, amounting to just 106 000 units sold in the US, which is no doubt highly disappointing for all involved, although not entirely unexpected with the news of major layoffs at Raven Software following shortly after the release of the game.

Batman: Arkham Asylum, on the other hand and in stark contrast to the performance of Wolfenstein, has managed to sell an incredible two million units in the two weeks it’s been on sale worldwide.

593 000 of those sales were recorded on PS3 and Xbox 360 in the US alone, according to NPD’s report, up until August 29th.
