SEGA Sammy recently reported results of their first fiscal quarter of 2010, posting a year-on-year decline in sales and a net loss for the three month period ended June 30th - net sales decreased 19 percent from the same period last year to $638.44 million, as net loss was posted at $108.66 million compared to $111.19 million last year.
Additionally, official sales figures were revealed for their Wii-exclusive first-person shooter, The Conduit, which released in the US only seven days before the end of the quarter, but ten days into the second quarter of fiscal 2010 in Europe.
Consequently, sales of only 150 000 units was reported, despite the NPD Group’s report of 72 000 units in sales for June, the month in which the game was released in the US (the NPD Group only records sales figures for the US). It is then believed that the 150 000 sales figure refers to units shipped as opposed to units sold
Virtua Tennis 2009, meanwhile, sold 790 000 units across the PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii in the US and Europe during the quarter.
SEGA revealed that they had sold 2.65 million software units worldwide for the three month period, which is 61.5 percent down from the same time last year, which doesn’t help the company’s goal of selling 29.7 million units of software for this fiscal year. The company sold the most software this quarter on the Nintendo Wii with 550 000 software units, followed by 310 000 for the PS3 and 200 000 for the Xbox 360.
Net sales for the home videogame business were down to $190 million (a 41% decline), with an operating loss of 52.8 million, while net sales of the company’s pachislot machines business were up to $207.87 million.
SEGA cited the “global economic recession that has grown more acute since last year” as a reason for the company’s soft quarterly performance.
