Mega developers Rockstar recently announced that their latest Grand Theft Auto title, GTA: Chinatown Wars, will be releasing at the end of October for the PSP, as both a retail (disc-based) UMD and digital download via the PlayStation Network.
Chinatown Wars released earlier this year on the Nintendo DS to great critical acclaim, but worryingly low initial sales.
While Rockstar themselves said that they weren’t worried about the sales of the title on the traditionally family/kid-friendly handheld, and that the game would eventually ‘earn out,’ the worse than expected performance at retail was thought to point to a market trend specific to the DS (and the Wii) in that overtly ‘adult themed’ games would be rejected by the majority of users.
Whether that truly is the case or not, Rockstar are forging ahead with Chinatown Wars on the PSP, adding new content with “upscaled widescreen graphics, enhanced lighting and animation,” and also includes all-new story missions, taking full advantage of the PSP.
GTA: Chinatown Wars releases on October 20th, presumably in the US only, with a release in Europe following, presumably, on October 23rd.
