It’s long been rumoured that the Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson, would work with Bungie and Microsoft on a Halo-themed videogame, Halo Chronicles, but according to an interview with Jackson, ‘his’ Halo game projects is no more, thanks to the Halo film project falling through. Jackson said:
“That Halo project is no longer happening, it sort of collapsed when the movie didn’t end up happening.”
Jackson also spoke briefly about why the Halo film project didn’t come to fruition, saying: “Well, Microsoft has a whole strategy with the Halo property, and when the rights expired with the two studios, that sort of ended my involvement with the project.”
“That fell apart because of internal politics at Fox and Universal. It had nothing to do with the budget or anything else. In fact, we hadn’t even been greenlit at all at that point.”
Some good has come out of the movie project failing to get off the ground, however, as South African-born Neill Blomkamp is now working on a new movie, District 9, to replace the Halo project that he was set to direct, a movie that Jackson says would not have happened if the Halo movie had gone forward:
“District 9 was definitely born out of the Halo film ruins,” says Jackson, “and we wouldn’t have seen this movie if Halo had gone ahead. I have always felt that if fate is taking you somewhere, don’t fight it.
“We realized that we had a real talent in Neill Blomkamp, so we decided to find a project for him and we decided to build a story around his Live in Joburg short film.”
Look forward to it!
