Citing sales data provided by parent company Enterbrain, popular games magazine (and website) Famitsu has reported that the latest addition to the Dragon Quest franchise, Dragon Quest IX on the Nintendo DS, has sold 2 343 440 units in its first two days on sale.
This figure covers both the launch of the game (Saturday, July 11th) and the following day (Sunday, July 12th), which together constitute the game’s ‘launch week.’
These figures reveal that the sales of Dragon Quest IX’s are higher than its predecessor, Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2, which released back in 2004.
Dragon Quest VIII went on to sell an incredible 3.68 million units in Japan alone, which has lead analysts to predict that Dragon Quest IX could go on to reach 5 million units sold in the country.
It’s also being reported that Dragon Quest IX has seen a sell-through rate of 81.56%, which possibly means that the game is sold out across most retailers in Japan.
Additionally, these debut sales figures surpass those of Pokemon Pearl/Diamond in the country, but fall short of Final Fantasy VIII’s debut with 2 504 044 units sold during its first two days on sale.
