Game industry veteran, David Perry, has recently updated his personal blog with a post about his approach to cloud-based online gaming, or the ability to stream games to your computer screen (or TV) over an internet connection.
Earlier this year at the Game Developers Conference, a similar service, Onlive, was announced, which has since been hailed as a revolutionary solution (if it really works) to set-top box gaming, allowing gamers to choose from a vast number of games, and play them with an inexpensive routing device hooked up to your TV.
Dave Perry was a little frustrated over the Onlive revelation, as it surfaced that he, too, was working on such an online gaming solution, and that the plans he had put in place to announce the technology had been jeopardised, forcing him to speed up the announcement.
Called Gaikai, Perry’s solution offers a similar service to Onlive, but Perry claims Gaikai is different. From the post:
“We are not in competition with any other streaming company or technology, our business model is entirely different.”
Perry will be talking more about Gaikai in the near future, at conferences such as Develop and GDC Europe.
For now, though, Perry has released a homemade video of Gaikai at work, showing how he can play games such as World of Warcraft, Spore and Mario Kart, streaming from the Gaikai servers to his PC:
“This is just a simple demo of our Gaikai video game streaming technology working in a Firefox browser with no installs, no plug-ins. These retail games (selected because we think they are cool) are all being played on a remote server with a 800 mile round trip to my PC.”

Perry and his Gaikai team are looking for beta testers, so head on over to Gaikai.com to sign up.
