A boy and his blob for Wii detailed, plus first screens

Yesterday we brought you news that the latest edition of Nintendo Power had revealed the development of a boy and his blob for Wii. Today Majesco released more details about a boy and his blob, which is being released to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary.

The game first appeared on the NES in 1989 but now WayForward (known for Contra 4 and Shantae) will be developing a rebirth of the classic title that promises to expand upon the original platform adventure, feature “groundbreaking hand drawn and painted animation technology” and provide a “polished, cinematic feel” thanks to the all-new presentation.

The story sees an evil emperor seizing the throne of Blobolonia, with the blob and a young boy he encounters when he crash lands on earth being the inhabitant’s only hope. Gamers will step into the shoes of the young boy as they work together with the blob to solve puzzles, defeat monsters and most importantly stay out of trouble.

Simply feed the blob jelly beans to activate his special abilities and transform him into helpful tools, ranging from a ladder to a trampoline, a parachute, cannon and shield. Players will need to use the different forms of the blob to navigate the 40 side-scrolling levels of the game, unlocking hidden treasures and bonus content, as they journey to the Emperor’s Citadel.

Fans of the NES classic will remember beans such as Licorice Ladder, Apple Jack and Tangerine Trampoline, but also keep an eye out for new jellybeans, including Bubble Gum Bubble and Caramel Cannon.

A boy and his blob will be released exclusively for the Wii later this year in Europe, somewhere in the fall if the press release is to be closely inspected.

“When a boy and his blob first appeared in 1989, it captured the imagination of gamers everywhere with its heartwarming storyline and unique gameplay,” said Gui Karyo, Executive Vice President of Operations, Majesco Entertainment.

“Twenty years later, we are proud to bring an updated - yet still charming - reimagining of this beloved title to a new generation of Wii players.”
