Nintendo will no doubt be happy with the results of videogame sales for February 2009 in the US. The NPD Group’s data showed that the Wii was the best-selling console with 753 000 units sold while the ever-popular Wii Fit was the top game with 644 000 copies sold.
The Nintendo DS also outsold the rest of the competition with 588 000 units while five games published by Nintendo featured in the Top 10 (including Wii Fit, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros.) as well as Guitar Hero: World Tour for the Wii featuring at number 10.
Since then the publisher has announced that the latest NPD data shows that Wii Play has now sold more than 10 million units in the United States since the game launched in February 2007. According to the press release, Wii Play is now the “top-selling software on all consoles and portable systems in the United States.”
Wii Play sold 386 000 copies to secure fourth place in February. However, its inclusion with the NPD data continues to be controversial. Most people believe it should not be included because it comes bundled with a free Wii Remote.
“Wii Play mini-games are fun and they get people playing together,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Even if you believe people are buying Wii Play solely for the controller, that indicates that there are now more than 10 million people who have an extra Wii Remote controller in their homes. “
“When added to the 12.7 million Wii Remote controllers that have sold separately, this reinforces the growing ‘social gaming’ trend we have been seeing where friends and family use their Wii games as a social hub – both in person and online.”
According to Nintendo, Wii sales were up by 74% with lifetime US sales now standing at 19 million. The DS has sold a lifetime US total of 29 million. This will no doubt be boosted by sales of the Nintendo DSi which launches across the US on the 5th of April. It looks like Nintendo can sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.
