A great deal of news has come out of SCEA’s annual retail and publisher conference Destination PlayStation, most of it to do with the PSP.
Sony announced that popular titles including Rock Band, MotorStorm and LittleBigPlanet will be coming exclusively to the PSP for the first time.
Rock Band will debut on the PSP with Rock Band Unplugged, which will launch exclusively on the PSP. The game will showcase the PSP’s Wi-Fi capabilities, becoming the first PSP game to include a fully-featured in-game store for downloadable content in the North America and European markets.
MotorStorm Arctic Edge and LittleBigPlanet will launch in the US this autumn. Both titles will be built from the ground up.
LittleBigPlanet will be developed in conjunction with MediaMolecule and offer new SackBoy adventures with the “same play, create, share experience for gamers on-the-go, in addition to brand new levels and environments specifically created for the platform.”
Developed by Bigbig Studios (known for the Pursuit Force series), MotorStorm Arctic Edge sees the brutal off-road racer heading to Alaska. The game will also be available on the PS2 in the US this autumn. Check out our previous coverage for screens and the debut trailer of the game.
Sony highlighted major software support from SCEA’s publishing partners including Disney Interactive, EA, MTV Games, Square Enix and Ubisoft. In addition to the Hannah Montana PSP Entertainment Pack which includes a new Lilac PSP, Sony hopes to draw young female gamers in with Ubisoft’s Petz games, debuting on the PSP with new titles later this year.
Third party support for the PSP will continue throughout 2009 with various EA Sports titles including Madden NFL 10 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 as well as Square Enix’s Dissidia Final Fantasy (which has sold a whopping 850 000 units since launching in Japan) which lands in the US’s summertime.
Sony also announced that the new Warhawk Command Center will launch in PlayStation Home this week, offering “Warhawk fans a new place to socialize and strategize featuring the sand table.”
But it was not all about the PSP, Sony also previewed its line-up for the PS3 including Killzone 2, infamous, MLB 09: The Show, MAG, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and God of War III and highlighted key PlayStation Network games like Flower and Ragdoll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic.
“With a year of record sales ushering us into the new year, we continue to raise the bar on providing consumers the deepest and broadest entertainment content for every member of the family to enjoy,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA.
“With new content being added every day to the PlayStation Network combined with an unmatched line up of exclusive titles on PSP, and the roll out of truly groundbreaking games such as Killzone 2 for PS3, we remain confident in our approach and strategy for another record year of growth and momentum.”
