Last week we reported that the PSP had crossed the 50 million sales mark, today we have a Q & A with Sony about their thoughts on the PSP reaching this milestone.
Take a closer look for a breakdown of sales by territories as well as a unit sales forecast for this fiscal year and other interesting facts.
- Q: PSP sell-in of 50 million units is half of that of DS, what is your reaction to it?
PSP came in as a novice player into the portable entertainment device market, where Nintendo was an absolute champion. Since its launch in 2004, PSP has continued to offer 3D-CG games, high resolution movie viewing, and music, while realizing new ways (culture) of enjoying games with family and friends through ad-hoc mode and through the wireless Internet service. PSP has built a new market by enhancing the ways to enjoy digital entertainment on a portable device. PSP has gained robust support from users all over the world, and while achieving 50 million sales in 4 years from launch certainly is an important milestone, we will continue to aggressively promote to increase the installed base by enhancing / expanding content and services.
- Q: Competition within the market for portable devices has intensified (with DSi and iPhone), what is your strategy against other portable devices?
Since its launch, PSP has been offering entertainment and services that is only possible on PlayStation through exciting games, additional digital entertainment and unique network services. We will continue to expand and create a new world of computer entertainment with the PSP handheld entertainment system.
