Sony today announced that the PSP has sold 50 million units worldwide as at January 2009.
The PSP debuted in December 2004 in Japan as the first handheld platform from the PlayStation brand. It arrived on North American shores in March 2005 and a little while later in September across PAL territories. In September 2007 Sony launched the slim and light PSP (PSP-2000) followed by the PSP-2000 in October last year.
Currently there are over 2000 games available with cumulative software sell-in units reaching 200 million. In addition there are over 500 titles available from the PlayStation Network.
The press release also promised more exciting software titles in a variety of genres from third party developers and publishers and Sony. PSP gamers can also look forward to enhanced network services for both game and non-game entertainment content.

True, despite Nintendo's DS and Wii being in the headlines all the time with their sales numbers, the PSP has still been chugging along, putting out impressive numbers of its own.
